On Saturday, April 25, 2026, we will host the Joining Hands for Rady Children’s Casino Night fundraiser benefiting Inpatient Rehabilitation Services at Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego. This special evening will honor the Byrnes family of Scripps Ranch and their son, Brandon.
During his senior year of high school, Brandon suffered his first grand mal seizure without warning and was admitted to Rady Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The first two weeks were filled with uncertainty. He was diagnosed with FIRES/NORSE, a rare and life-threatening form of autoimmune encephalitis. The only way to stop the relentless seizures was to place Brandon in a medically induced coma to allow his brain time to rest and heal.
For nearly five weeks, Brandon fought for his life. The prognosis during the acute phase of FIRES/NORSE is dire — more than 30% of patients do not survive.
Brandon is now considered one of Rady Children’s greatest success stories among FIRES/NORSE patients. When he emerged from his coma, he had to relearn the most basic functions: swallowing, speaking, sitting up, standing, and walking. His recovery depended on the daily, intensive support of the Inpatient Rehabilitation team.
At Casino Night, guests will hear from Brandon and his doctor, Dr. John Luce, about his remarkable journey of resilience. Although Brandon continues to manage daily seizures as part of this chronic condition, his progress is a testament to the life-changing impact of these critical services.
The Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary is dedicated to advocating for Rady Children’s and raising funds to support programs that rely on philanthropy.
Together, we can help create more miracles.
